Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
Let’s face it. All of us would love to have a high-end memory foam mattress instead of the cheap one we picked up at a discount mattress store. However, a good memory foam mattress costs a lot of money, and many people just don’t have the extra lying around right now. Even if we can’t afford the mattress, a good memory foam pillow can still deliver a lot of the benefits for far less money.
The key to the memory foam technology is that it conforms to the shape of your body, taking pressure off of areas like your shoulders and hips that tend to bear most of your weight while you’re sleeping. That disproportionate pressure puts strain on the back, especially for those of us who sleep on our sides. That pressure, over time, can lead to soreness and even serious spinal issues.
By evening the pressure out, a memory foam mattress allows the body to be much more comfortable during sleep. Not only does that relieve pressure from the shoulders and hips, allowing the back and neck to remain straighter, it also tends to allow us to fall into a deeper and more prolonged sleep. Deeper sleep with fewer interruptions or shallow spots portends to better rest, which means we will be more refreshed and capable during the day.
For most people, especially those of us who work in front of a computer, the part of the body that gives us the most trouble is the neck. When we couple the strain of sitting in front of a computer all day with sleeping at an awkward angle, the result can be a persistent muscle tension in our shoulders and neck and, consequently, severe neck pain.
While buying a memory foam mattress may be out of the question financially, a memory foam pillow can go a long way toward alleviating the pain in our shoulders and neck, and the cost of a good one is generally between two and three hundred dollars. That may sound like a lot of money for a pillow, but it’s not too high a price for reduced neck pain.
Another solution for persistent neck pain is visiting a chiropractor or massage therapist on a regular basis. A chiropractor usually costs between forty and sixty dollars per visit, and a massage therapist can easily cost fifty to a hundred dollars per hour. It doesn’t take long for either of these services to surpass the cost of a memory foam pillow – and the pillow can prevent the problems before they even start.
Unfortunately, our society tends to wait to address an issue until after it has gotten out of control rather than taking a proactive approach, which can eliminate problems before they even start. As a result, many people don’t even consider upgrading their bed in order to give themselves better sleep. Instead, they compensate by drinking coffee and going to the chiropractor.
So try the memory foam pillow, but be careful. The cost of chiropractic care and massages will reach the price of a high quality memory foam mattress sooner or later, and once you see how much more comfortable the pillow makes you it might not take long for you to want to upgrade the whole bedroom set.
